AI assistants are calling local businesses. Is anyone answering yours?
Customers have started sending software to shop for them. Big retailers are pushing those shopping agents away, so the agents use the doors that stay open: your website and your phone line. A call from an AI assistant asking your price and your next opening is a customer asking through a middleman. If nobody picks up, the assistant reports back on the businesses that did.
Treat an AI caller like a customer's assistant, because that is what it is. Google Search has offered a "Have AI check pricing" option in the US since July 2025, which phones local businesses to ask about pricing and availability and announces itself as an automated system calling from Google. To win those calls, answer every ring (nights and weekends included), give a real price range or diagnostic fee, state your next available slot, and leave a way to book: a callback number or a booking link the assistant can pass back to the customer.
What happened this week
On October 15, 2026, users of xAI's Grok shopping agent posted that Amazon was stopping their agents from placing orders. Elon Musk replied on X: "Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon." Amazon had not commented when Moneywise/Yahoo Finance reported the exchange. The same report says Amazon blocked Meta's Muse assistant earlier, and Amazon has been in court with Perplexity over its Comet shopping agent since 2025 (GeekWire).
Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham summed up why it matters: "If they need to ban agents, it must mean people want to use them, or there would be no point."
Why a plumber should care about an Amazon fight
The giants are fighting over who controls the customer when software does the shopping. Local service businesses are on the other side of that fight. Nobody blocks an assistant from dialing a phone number, and the assistant has a job to finish. It will call down the list until it gets an answer it can report.
- Google already does this at scale. TechCrunch reported on July 16, 2025 that the feature "uses AI to call local businesses on your behalf to collect information about availability and pricing," rolling out to all US Search users. The searcher answers a few questions, and Google makes the calls.
- The assistant can only report what it heard. A business that rings out to voicemail gives the assistant nothing to pass back. A business that answers with a price and an opening becomes the option the customer sees.
- After-hours is where this bites. People hand errands to an assistant in the evening and on weekends, which is when most small businesses have the phone on voicemail.
Script 8: answering an AI assistant that calls for a customer
Add this to the seven after-hours scripts. It works whether a person, an answering service, or an AI receptionist picks up.
[Caller: "This is an automated assistant calling on behalf of a customer to ask about pricing and availability for a water heater repair."]
"Thanks for calling [Company Name]. Happy to help. Our diagnostic visit is $[Fee], and that goes toward the repair if the customer goes ahead. Most water heater repairs we do land between $[Low] and $[High] depending on the unit.
Our next opening is [Day] between [Time Window]. If the job is urgent, like water on the floor right now, we have a technician on call tonight.
The fastest way to lock in that slot is for the customer to call or text us at [Number], or book at [Booking Link]. If you can share the customer's name and callback number, we'll reach out and confirm."
Five fixes that make you the business an assistant recommends
- Answer every call, all hours. The assistant is not going to leave a voicemail and wait. Use the after-hours calculator to see what the unanswered share already costs you.
- Publish a price signal. A diagnostic fee, a service-call fee, or a typical range on your website gives assistants something concrete to quote. Our cost guide shows how other trades present it.
- Keep your Google Business Profile hours true. If you take emergency calls overnight, say so. Assistants start from local search results.
- Give the assistant a way to book. A text-back number or booking link that the assistant can pass to the customer closes the loop the same night.
- Train whoever answers. Staff, call centers, and AI receptionists should treat a polite robot voice as a customer, not a spam call. Hanging up on it hangs up on the customer behind it.
For the rest of your night setup, use the 18-step after-hours call checklist and the call forwarding guide. Trade guides: plumbers, HVAC, electricians.
